The Alamo and San Antonio

IMG_1444We just arrived in San Antonio and our first stop is the Alamo.

IMG_1445We only had half an hour before it closed, so it was a quick visit.

IMG_1446The Spanish buildings are amazing to see.

IMG_1447The site of the Alamo is rich in history.

IMG_1448I wish we had more than 30 minutes here.

IMG_1453The Church was open longer and we were able to take our time.

IMG_3617Finally, a picture of me! Darrel never has his phone to snap pics of me.

San Antonio/Alamo KOA:
https://koa.com/campgrounds/san-antonio/
  • Campsite #E-08 - $113.40 (with the KOA discount)
  • Onsite restaurant, bar, pools and entertainment.
  • Secured campground with 24x7 onsite security.

The staff loved meeting Cody and offered many hugs and kisses. The campground is in an area that is a bit dodgy but the onsite security removes any worries. We felt safe and the campground was large and lots of walking options for Cody. The Compound is not far from the Alamo, you can take a bus (DON'T), use a ride share service (Uber/Lyft), or drive your own car. There is pay parking around the Alamo, but again, it's a big city and the downtown core is a bit dodgy too! Lots of homeless, poverty and drug issues were seen.

Goodbye Gulf Shore, Hello Houston

IMG_1417It was a good day to leave, before the storm hits.

IMG_1431The water is rough and I was concerned that the roads off the peninsula could be flooded.

IMG_1436The bridge back to the road to Houston.

IMG_1440Downtown Huston has the I-10 run right through it. I was supposed to see how small the downtown core is. I think Calgary is larger, to be honest.

IMG_1442Houston's spaghetti bowl, reminds me of Phoenix's (also on the I-10).

Lifes A Beach

IMG_3548The county lets you park your car and motorhome on the beach. Many boondock here, including our friends Woody and John.

Cody-00914Cody living the salt life!

IMG_3597Cody loves to follow his nose and cruise up and down the each with his paws in the sand and the sun on his back! Now this is living life to the fullest.

IMG_3579Lovely afternoon stroll.

IMG_3604Following the path back to the resort.

IMG_3559Enjoying the sunset while saying goodbye to the Gulf's beach as we get ready to depart in the morning.

Daytrip to Galveston

IMG_3517Waiting for the ferry to Galveston.

IMG_3529Oh look, a large coach like ours fits!

IMG_3530All aboard.

IMG_1374Oil tankers all queued up waiting to enter the port.

IMG_3540Ships as far as the eye can see - I think we counted over 30 waiting.

IMG_1400Nice boardwalk in Galveston.

IMG_3543Cody enjoying the ferry ride back to Bolivar Peninsula with a haul from Walmart.

Bolivar Peninsula - Galveston Ferry:
https://www.bolivarpeninsulatexas.com/About/Galveston-Bolivar-Ferry or http://traffic.houstontranstar.org/ferrytimes/
  • Free ferry
  • 2.7 miles
  • 18 minutes duration
  • 9 min loading time

The ferry was quick and easy to board. I was really surprised to find out that the ferry was free and ran 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I think this is the quickest way to a hospital for many, via the hospital express boarding lane. There is very little stores (grocery and what not) on the Bolivar Peninsula, so a quick trip to Galveston lets you do your major shopping and pick up the much needed milk, bread and TP! Winking

IMG_1357Welcome to Texas!

IMG_3402We stopped at the visitor centre to walk Cody and call home to check in with Mom.

IMG_3461The beach runs for miles here on Bolivar Peninsula.

IMG_3476Cody off-leash and enjoying his morning walk.

IMG_3477The port of Galveston to the right. I think we counted 30+ ships waiting to dock in port.

IMG_3462An offshore drilling platform. Here is a website that shows you how to search for drilling platforms https://www.saltwater-recon.com/oil-gas-platforms-map/ and some cool webcams too: https://www.saltwater-recon.com

IMG_3469We drove around, discovering the area and found Fort Travis.

IMG_3471Lots of grass for Cody to walk on around Fort Travis.

IMG_3472The bunkers and gun turrets were interesting to see.

  • Campsite #G-12 - $65.00 a night and a $12.00 a night resort fee
  • Onsite restaurant, bar, pools and entertainment.
  • Just steps to the beach on the other side of the sand dunes. Great location, relaxing fun environment.

It's obviously off-season in January but I can imagine how busy the place would be in the summer months. The entire peninsula is narrow and water on each side making this place feel like you are on an island. When we arrived it was overcast and windy, but the sun has come out and the wind is gone. It's time to take Cody for another beach walk.
